Hey guys.

Just wondering if anybody here has tried to engine swap the Skyactiv 2.5T turbocharged. I've only been able to find a little bit of information about it. It looks like it was used in a couple CX-9 models? I've read a few places where it has been said that the engine should theoretically fit into both the 3 and the 6. Has anybody tried to perform this swap?

This all probably sounds ridiculous, and that's because it is. I'm probably being very farfetched here, but I just wanted to check to see if anybody had any stories about any attempts - successful or unsuccessful. I would post links to indicate a few of my sources, but unfortunately my post count is too low to do so. I should be able to post some later in this thread whenever my count gets higher.

The new Mazda 6, with the Turbo engine you are mentioning, is just being debuted at the LA Auto Show that starts December 1st-10th.

If it fits a 6, it should fit a 3, but there would be a lot more too it than just getting it to fit.

Swapping the CX-9 turbo engine seems like a world of problems. Considering ECU differences compared to N/A models, you would likely have to swap to a CX-9 ECU. This means you would also need to swap the entire interior console, as ECUs are locked to console electronics. After that, you will have to find a suitable transmission. If the current 2.5L variants do not bolt-up, you would have to swap a CX-9 auto transmission, and possibly the entire AWD drivetrain?... So it would be way easier to get a custom turbo kit working, assuming you don't have a problematic Mitsubishi ecu (worst to tune for turbos or other high output skyactiv's). I also can't imagine the price of a used CX-9 engine, console, ECU, trans, etc. being that reasonable.

Why not just run the intake, IC, turbo, manifold and do custom piping with a custom tune? Seems like it would be easier than swapping the entire motor over and most should work with little modification. Your main threat is the ECU, have fun getting it to play nice with the new turbo. Lol

Why not just run the intake, IC, turbo, manifold and do custom piping with a custom tune? Seems like it would be easier than swapping the entire motor over and most should work with little modification. Your main threat is the ECU, have fun getting it to play nice with the new turbo. Lol
This sounds far more reasonable in retrospect. With that being said, though, I read that the 2.5T runs at a lower compression ratio. Therefore, it would also be a matter of dropping the ratio in the engine so that it doesn't completely fry the thing. Is that even possible?

I agree that a custom turbo would be the best option. Fortunately, Corksport announced that they've started developing one. That means that, at their general rate, we should have it in at least 3 years. :laugh2: I'm just joking. It won't take that long. Probably.... Hopefully...... Regardless, I can wait. It isn't essential to me that I squeeze out every ounce of HP that I can get just yet, I've only had my car for about a month and a half now - so I don't want to go messing her up too bad!

This would normally be the right idea, but it might be difficult to use those turbo-skyactiv parts on a N/A skyactiv engine. The skyactiv 2.5 turbo is unique, in that it uses a special flow control valve to vary exhaust flow through its unique 4-3-1 manifold. It also has a unique EGR cooler that you may need to transfer over. It seems that all these new technologies can only be controlled by the new CX-9 ECU (for the moment), and then you run into the problem of transferring over the ECU again... Might be easier just to make a custom turbo manifold, and piece together all the turbo parts similarly to the way its been done on skyactiv 2.0 Mazda 3 turbo projects. I've seen nearly half a dozen individuals with custom Mazda 3 skyactiv 2.0 turbo kits who have been tuned by OVT. Those running Mitsubishi ECUs have had all kinds of cut-off throttle issues which are supposedly getting fixed by Mat right now (keep following FB Mazda 3 Tuning group). The difficult part will be to get a custom 2.5L manifold created though; those with 2.0s can obtain turbo manifolds from Miata kit manufactures like AVO, and do minor modifications.
