My 2012 Focus would cut off fuel when over 2000rpm and coasting in gear, and change timing for 91 octane. Owners manual stated 87 octane, but that it would take advantage of higher octane for better performance. Does anybody know if Mazda's engines do the same.

For the Mazda the fuel will cut off above 1000rpm when engine breaking.

As for the 91 octane, the Mazda3 will not change the timing or produce more power. The only benefit from running 91 octane is that there will most likely be 0% ethanol in it and you will get better mpgs. Also 91 octane would benefit the car if you are driving in very hot conditions or towing something which would cause the engine to run hotter and become more prone to knocking.

Soon however, Dynotronics will be capable of tuning the 2014 Mazda3 to utilize 91 octane gas and produce much more power :thumbup 1:
