Having done a decent amount of research it makes alot of sense to install a catch can IMO. BUT one glaring issue I cant get over is if there is high amount of water and it freezes during the winter. Seems like a frozen catch can would be even worse than not having one at all. What do you guys think?

Do some research into how the vapours flow into and out of the can. There is a requirement to check the level of any fluids in the can. If you don't do that then you are a fool, therefore it doesn't matter if it freezes (unless you are lazy and let it fill up completely)

I have had an OCC on my 2015 Mazda3 since 2016 and it has never frozen up on me. I always drain it once a month or maybe twice. It depends on the time of year.

What comes out when you drain it? Have you checked to see if the can is actually doing what it is supposed to be doing, ie collecting oil? How much of whats in the can is oil?
