I'm super impressed with the fuel economy of my 2.5 6MT, but the gas tank is confusing me. I can get 6.8-7.2 l/100km per tank and go between 520-560km.. The problem, when I go to fill up with DTE at less than 20km left, I can barely get 40 litres into the tank... There's a 10 litre reserve at least when the tank says 0km to empty.
I'm going to guess this has to do with the engine being DI and the fuel pump needing adequate gas to keep it cool?

That's about right.

I had to convert my US logs (I left the measures in) to metric, but here you go:

When my DTE meter goes to zero the car still has a bit of a buffer. There's anywhere from 7L to 8L (1.85 USgal to 2.11 USgal) left in it based on my experience in the few times I let it go to zero (it's not common -- but it's enough to establish a baseline). Since the tank holds 50L (13.21 USgal) it should take about 42L to 43L (11.10 USgal to 11.36 USgal) at most at exactly zero. If you have 20 km left and average 7L/100km, I figure you should need about 41L to 42L at fill up.

So yes there's a substantial buffer. You're good. :)
