How bad is it if the ABS case has been cracked just enough that there is an opening? Could it be sealed instead of being replaced?

if you mean the brake system control box unit, if the case was broken yes, can be sealed in case it still function and there are no damage at the socket ( Plug ) because its dangerous if the socket failed at time need hard break.
