Evening all,

New to the forum, so please excuse if this is in the wrong area. I think it should be ok though.

Yesterday I bought a Mazda3 2010 2.2D Sport Manual here in the UK. 108k miles on the clock so no young pup, but hopefully it will last a while.

We started and stopped the car a number of times and probably did an hour to two driving yesterday and all was fine. The problem I think occurred over night and how we left the car in the first place (woops).

Later today I found that the back light was on, so I think this was draining the power. But, the more complicated thing is that I realised when I came back to the car this morning, that the dash lights were still on! When I opened and closed the doors, it bleeped 10 times (groups of 2) and seemed not to lock.

At first I thought this was something to do with the proximity of the keys (lights turning on when I come close to the car). But then I very briefly read on the forums that sometimes it stops you from locking if it detects a key is in the car. I know one of the keys are low in battery, so perhaps it ‘registered’ for some time but then thought it was still in there when it wasn’t (I’m no expert). Regardless, I thought the car was off, but I think (due to the dash being on) that the car’s electrics were on pretty much all night!

As a result it lugged in the morning and didn’t start. Later in the day it didn’t even remotely make an attempt to start up. I then read online about tapping the power button 3 times to force it to shut down and that worked fine.

I then used the jump leads (had to buy from down the road) to get the power back into the battery which worked fine. I then went for a good 1 hours drive to get the battery back up to normal (if not damaged too much already). I stopped it and started again a few times and all was fine.

NOW…. The problem now, is that the engine management light is on, along with the traction control light!?!? This wasn’t any issue at all the day before… do you think this is something to do with the battery being sketchy for a while and now it’s throwing up issues with sensors and the likes of?

Not sure where to take it from here? The car drives just fine. Should I take to garage, or a way to clear the messages and then they will pop up again if any new issues come up (I have very limited technical knowledge by the way e.g. no ecu readers etc).

Thoughts welcome.

Best,

Theo

Check the terminals on the battery for corrosion first. If they are clean have the battery load tested, if its ok have the alternator tested as well. Something is preventing the battery from charging, you just need to find out what. If you have a multi-meter you can do a quick preliminary check yourself. With the car off, the battery should be 12v DC or slightly more. With the car running the voltage at the battery should be 14.5v or so.

Ok interesting. Because no issues were before, and they came about after battery issue, is it fairly safe to say it's nothing to worry about mechanically?

Will be interesting to se how she starts tomorrow. If slight sluggin then I will be a little worried. Hopefully all will be good though. I know the car was sat for I think 2 weeks (at the dealer) so this maybe partly due to malfunction.

I have a picture of the battery, but I cant post links due to being new to the forum.

Perhaps the battery is original too?

FYI I'm 99% sure I was at fault because the old key kept on triggering the car from not properly locking. This then caused the lights to stay on (inc dash) and drained the battery.

Battery went on meltdown and then went mental... I disconnected the black from the battery and left it for a few mins then jump it with my other car and went for a long drive.

Car is working 100% fine bar a few bits a I'm looking to get on the next service.

I got the same issue on my 2016 a long time ago when the car was fairly new. Loose battery connection was the culprit. Retightened things and all was good. Mentioned it to my service guy and he said there was a TSB to check and retighten the battery connections for all new models.
