IS there any way to turn on the backlight without turning on the map lights in the front? Its blinding if my child wants to read in the back seat at night

Install a portable aux light that shines down from the back of the seat and won't be blinding the driver for that purpose? Either that or you might have to put some blocking on your dome light.

This might not be the answer your are looking for, but they have portable reading lights that clip onto books... Probably the simplest and easiest fix for this.

Energizer makes one for $5.99.

The switch in the front operates both front and back light. That means wiring is there, wouldn't it be fairly easy to add a switch there at the back that would just illuminate the back light?

Jeez, it's simple things like this combined with not illuminated windows buttons on all doors that makes me sigh really hard at these design choices. Such an amazing car, full options and it misses these simple things. My 20 year old volkswagen has all this and even more.....
