Let me start off by complaining as many have that we should be able to shut the damn windows & moonroof after we turn off the car.

The routine when I get home is to shift into neutral, shut all open windows/moonroof, engage parking brake, turn off car, etc. Now I think you all now where I'm going with this.

10 minutes after I get home I hear a loud knocking and go outside to see my neighbor next to my car, which is about 25 feet behind where I parked. I forgot to set the brake and it rolled back until it hit the curb behind my driveway.

Fortunately I live on some weird cul-de-sac long driveway thing, where there aren't any steep grades up to my driveway and the curb that runs perpendicular to my driveway is a very short distance away. Thanks to the stock monster truck nature of the car and the low curb, it seems unharmed; I think it just hit the rear tires and stopped.

From now on I'm going to stop being lazy and just keep my foot on the damn clutch until the windows are shut.

That sucks! I hope someone figures something out so that we can close the windows/moonroof within 30 seconds or so of turning off the car...

The only thing I am finding weird is why did it not roll as soon as you got out? Is your driveway such a small grade that you just did not notice it rolling and in the next 10 minutes it managed to work itself all the way to the curb?

Or, you could do the same routine you described, just switch 'shut all open windows/moonroof' and 'engage parking brake' with each other. That's what I do...neutral, brake, windows up. Then turn car off and put in first gear.

It does suck that the windows don't go up after the car is off. Just tonight out of habit I turned the car off before putting the windows up, and I had to press the start button twice to put it in ACC mode, and then put them up. Of all the things Mazda did right with these cars, you'd think they wouldn't have done so many little things wrong...

Your story reminded me of when I first bought my 1991 Miata in 2005. Three days after I brought it home, my wife was on her way out the door to go to work at 6am and she came back in and woke me up, telling me I must have forgotten to put my car in gear (I didn't use my parking brake because it tended to stick). I get up and go out to see my car had rolled backwards out of its space and was backed against the far curb. I could SWEAR I remembered to put it in 1st...I walked up to it and noticed the door wasn't fully shut, and then...I see the convertible top had been knifed from one side of the car to the other. Some %@$! had climbed in through the top and knocked it out of gear while making off with my...sunglasses.

The grade is very small, I could've sworn it was flat....until now.

I do that routine too, Vater, my roommate distracted me this time and I forgot that step.

First, glad your car wasn't damaged.

You can change it under the menu

"Keys and Locks > Advnaced Keyless Entry > Adjust the transition stages from engine running to system OFF condition".

Check the box or tell the dealer (if it's the only change you want to make) so that the transition is ON>ACC>OFF. Then, you car will shut down the engine and go into the Accessories mode with one push of the button and the second push will shut the car down.

kinda curious as to how your room mate could distract you though. she must be really hot if it's a girl or he must've had some huge case of beer if it's a guy

I did have the dealer set it up to On>ACC>OFF, because I like to keep listening to music until the last possible moment, but the windows won't shut for me on ACC, only in the ON mode.

My roommate just started talking to me as I drove up and she talks a lot and million miles a minute so it just broke my train of thought/routine.

That sucks. This is my 1st manual car so im trying to make it a habit to always use my e-brakes when parking. Even when im driving my other car which is an automatic, I make it a habit to hit the e-brakes.

He, he. I did that once when I first got my Wrangler back in high school. Pulled into the garage and forgot to leave it in gear. I couple hours later, there's a knock at the door. Surprise, it's our across the street neighbor who had moved in the day before. I say hi, look over her shoulder and see the Jeep in the middle of the road. It had rolled out of the garage, down the driveway, into her driveway and hit the side of her garage, and then rolled back intoo the street. She was cool about it, thank goodness.

I'm glad your car was not damaged.

I ALWAYS put my car in first gear when I park to keep it from rolling away. I don't trust the parking brake on any car.

I worked as a grounds keeper during the summer of my college years and we had a yard full of vehicles and trucks parked in what we thought was a very flat parking lot. One morning we had to use the 5-ton dump truck and a co-worker parked it in its assinged spot when he was done, set the parking brake, but did not put it in gear. When we all got back at the end of the day, we found the dump truck had rolled about 75 yards across the yard and was resting gently up against the building where the office staff worked.

Ummmm, no. She was a typical average looking middle aged woman. Super nice though, unlike most of the other people in that neighborhood that would tell on me when I had parties while my folks were out of town.

I would say "those were the good ole days" but I don't want to admit I'm getting older.
