I've been dealing with this issue for a month and thought it would be good to share on here. I have a 2019 Mazda 3 Premium. I was about to head to work on January 14 and when I put the car in reverse to get out of my driveway I got a message on the dashboard that said Automatic Transmission Failure and to take my car to get serviced. The car wouldn't move at all in reverse and made a very strange clanking type of noise.

I thought maybe it was just a random issue and would fix itself if I started the car again. Nope, the issue persisted. If I put the car in drive it would go forward but it started shaking and also making a weird noise. All the lights on the dash lit up. I called the dealer and told them the issue and they told me to take it in the following Friday and they would check it out. I had to get the car towed to the dealership that Friday and they barely got around to checking it out on February 11th. They said the codes are showing a ton of transmission issues and that it should be covered under the powertrain warranty but that they would need to contact Mazda corporate for advice on how to proceed with this.

I just think it's very strange that the transmission would mess up all of a sudden. I didn't have any issues or any signs of a potential issue leading up to this. I tried looking through the forum to see if anyone else had something similar happen but couldn't find anything.

The only time I see issues like this is if you have a steep decline driveway and never use your parking brake relying on the transmission to do the work of locking your car in place. The other time, is if you have a transmission failure which is pretty rare on these cars, you really have to abuse it pretty heavily to have issues or just have a factory defect. The fact that you didn't take it in right away means it was likely starting and by the end of the month your transmission is just chock full of whatever is causing the problem.

My driveway is flat so that wouldn't be the issue. Also I called the dealership as soon as the issue occurred, they just told me they wouldn't be able to see it until the following week. I didn't drive the car after the transmission malfunction happened and I had it towed to the dealer. Unfortunately they didn't have a loaner vehicle for me, so I've been having to borrow a family members car. I called today and asked for an update, they said they are still waiting for a response from Mazda corporate on how they should proceed and that they still don't have a loaner available but are working to get one for me.

In other Mazda Forums there are complaints of instant failures, my self, I am on Mazda number 2, the first was a 2020 CX-30 same as a 3 paltform, drive line, engine etc, Trans went out in 200 miles, and other issues, it spent 12 weeks in the shop, instant buy back in California, got a Mazda 3 AWD preferred, that is being bought back next month, March 2022, constant drive line vibrations, Climate control still not working, radar cruise control as failed 20 times in a year, the transmission as started to become jerky, got stuck in 3rd, and lurches in reverse, and now in traffic at a stop, the trans will suddenly lurch forward, and other issues, so if you are unlucky like I have been, big issues on new mazdas are common, oh and one Mazda 3 we test drove, it broke on the test drive, and Mazda Corporate, what a joke, don't expect anything fast to happen, and do not expect them to be truthful. I run the Automotive section for a local Law Enforcement division, I documented everything, pictures, I was lucky I could scan the car and make copies of the data and faults that will not trigger a Check engine light, but the dash lighting up, saying system failure contact a dealership is almost weekly now, with only 8,000 miles on it.

I got my car back today. Mazda ended up replacing the entire transmission. Thankfully it was covered under warranty. While I have enjoyed my Mazda 3, I'm going to look into trading the vehicle in. Having to replace the transmission on a car that is barely 2 years old isn't a good sign.

Oh no , Mazda have my Mazda 3 2019 Astina at the moment. Same thing, they are waiting on head office for advice on transmission. Luckily it’s under warranty still ( expires in Aug 24) they have had the car since Monday and have told me to hang onto the loan car until after the weekend. Apparently I can’t drive my car in that state. Honestly the only issue I had with it was a squeak but they say they heard a clunk and a squeak which is the transmission?!?!?

I have a 2019 Mazda3 GTI and my transmission just failed suddenly and I cannot get it into gear. Happened on the Thursday before Easter and cannot get it seen to by Mazda Belconnen until 29 April 2025. I will get it towed to the Dealership it only has 45K on the clock. Flat driveway and serviced regularly this is very concerning. Regards, Sarah L - Canberra Australia.

Hi Guys 2020 Astina G25 purchased second hand with 30k Km and about 3 months warranty. I started having concerns re: very early shifting from 1-2 and 2-3 and a small lurch that resembled converter lock up in all gears a couple of seconds after each shift. Took it to Central Coast Motor Group. They carried out some testing and dropped the sump for further investigation. Must have been no good because they fitted a new transmission without any further questions. Unfortunately, transmission No2 has been giving similar dramas only today whilst merging onto the motorway. I rolled the throttle on and had no response from the car. I continued to depress the accelerator for the car to drop multiple gears and send the engine over 5k RPM it then saw the error of its ways and selected a more appropriate gear. Needleless to say when I arrived at my destination, I called Mazda again and they are going to look at it again in the next couple of days. We have clocked up < 10k km since acquiring the vehicle. This Mazda no. 4 for our family and the first to give any problems. So, it's a little disappointing. Still have 2012 Mazda 3 6 speed manual and I love that car. I have owned it since it was 18k km old now has over 180k km and it still runs like a clock. Regards Chris Gosford NSW AU.
