Has anyone swapped out the stock 18 inch rims for 17 or 16s? I hit a damn pothole and either bent a rim or messed up the tire. I'm looking at getting more sidewall. Can't keep buying rims.

Recommendations?

Never buy one @ $500 OEM alloy rim, because a set of 4 is $1,200.

17x7.5 +45 with 205/50 Continental Extreme Contact Sports

Lots of different rims out there. Don't cheap out, get something light and either flow formed or forged.

What about putting 225/45/18 tires?? Its a little taller and has more width to disperse the impact

The difference in relevant measurements are less than .5" of width and less than .2" from wheel center to road. Not enough to make any sort of difference.

A set of 4 OEM alloys will give you 3 spare or inexpensive steel OEM rims $60-80.

16"
205-65-16 would give you the height, but that will require a new set of rims/tires (equivalent to 215-45-18 ride height)

Yup..OEM for me... just add in upgraded lugs and 5mm spacers though..

I got my alloys at a junkyard in NY. Shipped to FL the 4 units were cheaper than one at the local dealer.

There is a less choice in smaller tires under 17"/18", which are very comparable in prices. Most people go to 16" for snow tires or more rubber for softer ride and doesn't sacrifice in diameter differences.

When it was time to replace the crappy Dunlop tires (only 14k from when I bought the car new) I went to 16" tires/rims from Discount Tire. After selling my 18" clown rims on Craigslist for $350 the difference in buying new 16" tires/rims vs 18" tires was almost a wash. Rides better and looks better.
