I'm experiencing a whine/whir noise in my car and the dealership said it's just from my winter tires, but i'm fairly certain that's not the case. Can anyone else with a 2014-2017 Mazda 3 6MT let me know if their car exhibits the same noise? If no one else has this problem, i'll try a different dealership.

With windows closed and radio/fan off (make cabin as quiet as possible), get to about 75-80 KM/H in 6th gear, then let off the gas and coast, listening for a whining noise. The whine should gradually get more faint as your speed decreases. If you notice the whine, then push in the clutch or shift into neutral and see if the whining stops.

My car exhibits this whining noise at different speeds in different gears, during coasting and light acceleration (harder acceleration and engine noise overpowers the whine). I'm not sure if this is normal for these cars, or if there may be an issue with my transmission. My previous fully bolted Mazdaspeed 6 was so loud i could hardly hear an ambulance, let alone a faint gear whine.

Hmm I don't notice this whine noise you're describing. I have a 2015 2.5S M/T though. Is this the the noise you're talking about? Because this I have, during acceleration:

I have a 2017 mazda3 touring with the 6MT and mine also has a slight whine. My car only has about 700 miles on it. I mainly notice it when I'm in a low gear, like first or second, and I let off the throttle and its just coasting. Not sure if yours is similar to that , but I figured id chime in. Also, I have summer tires on mine.

Got the same problem, Mazda 3 2L automatic 2017.
when driving at 75-85 km/h im having a weird whining noise.

Tried to shift into N while driving but the noise still persists.
I tried to send the car to the mechanic but he didn't find anything.

Anyone know this problem? it's drives me crazy!

Long term follow up

After posting this thread, I went to New Roads Mazda in Newmarket, Ontario. My uncle used to work for Mazda Canada and he has friends there, so I knew I'd get an honest opinion. I explained the issue with the noise, and after their technician test drove it, he found nothing out of the ordinary. I've since driven the car another 25,000 km and I've had no issues with the transmission, and I don't even really notice the noise anymore. I have a feeling that I was more attuned to the quite noises since my previous car was so LOUD, so I was likely getting worried over nothing.
@alon2299: you may want to see a dealership about your noise, as I understand there is a known issue for some automatic equipped Mazda 3s with a whining noise, though that might have been earlier models only.

I have a 2017 2.5L Touring and mine just started having the whining noise a couple weeks ago.. mostly when cruising on the highway.

My last car, a Lexus IS250 awd, had the same whine and that was a confirmed problem for when both the aux and cig lighter were being used.. yea it was a weird problem. But that's obviously not the case for my mz3

most transmissions make some noise, however when you go from a car thats very noisy in the cabin to a car thats engineered very quiet you can notice these small noises more, i have a 2014 sport nav diesel with the 6 speed manual transmission and it has a very slight whine, tbh i never noticed it until i read this thread and took it out for a drive but with the fan and stereo on you cant hear it unless you have super hearing.

My 2014 Mazda 3 with automatic transmission is now in the local dealership having had the gearbox stripped. Mine was making a whining noise and after they stripped it down discovered metal filings within the sealed system. Now awaiting a complete new gearbox system at the cost of over £3k. Mazda were going to charge me £720 to carry out the diagnostic but have now decided to split the whole cost 50/50 which brings my bill down to £1,960!
Can anyone explain how the metal filings got there in a sealed system where no maintenance or preventative measures can be taken. Manufacturing fault??? Was not expecting to fork out for a new gearbox after 47,500 on the clock!

So I drive a 2015 Mazda 3 6MT. I originally had the whining noise as well but I found out the cause for mine. When my radio was set to AUX, and a device wasn't connect to to wire, I'd get the wine. But when a device was plugged in, it would stop. So I ask a friend who is a mechanic, he claimed the Wining sound was caused from feed back by the vehicle itself. So to test to see if this was true, I unplugged the cord and got zero wine. I plugged the cord in with no device connected. I had the wining. Finally, I connected a device and testing one more time. No wining. So I believe the statement is true that the wining sound is caused by the feedback from the car itself.
