This past year my 2010 (76,0000 miles) has been making a loud sound related to wheel speed. Sounds like I have huge lugged snow tires on it. Could this be bearings?

I could take to the shop, but I'm afraid of the an$wer...

Anyone else experience this?

Jack the rear of the car up without the parking brake on and spin the wheels with your hands. If it makes a grinding noise when the wheels are spinning than it is probably wheel bearings. Could be a brake hanging up if not a wheel bearing or a suspension part broken. Wont know unless you jack up the car or bring it to a shop. Let us know what you find out.

as he said, but note the brakes will make some grinding noise naturally (you usually can smell or feel hanging calipers after a long drive as one wheel will be much hotter and/or have more brake dust that the rest all the time and it can even pull the vehicle to one side as you brake.) best way to test bad bearings is to jack one wheel up at a time and grab the tire at 12 and 6 o clock and push in and out if it moves the bearing is bad if not continue and do so 9 and 3 and push back and forth if it moves the bearing is bad. im going to add that if you havent regularly and religiously had the tires rotated on these cars then its probably tire noise as these cars are hard on tires especially the rear being that it has built in negative camber to be more sporty and handle better. my 11 i bought used had almost new tires but had never had them rotated and when i did the first time they became so loud i thought i had a wheel bearing going out, ended up having to get new tires for a different reason and it resolved the issue so check for odd tire wear patterns

Most likely your rear tires are worn on the inside edges and are no longer round, but rather have a bunch of flattened spots (think of it like an octagon). This is normal for theses cars and can only be reduced by rotating the tires more often.

yep have to do it religiously every 5-6000 miles or the tires do that. down side to a sporty car many bmw's lexus's infinitie's etc get this as well because people dont follow recommended maintenance

Interesting discussion. I have a 2012 hatch (Skyactiv) and am experiencing major roaring noise in the front end when I get above 50km/h. It is particularly loud when I turn the wheel slightly to the right while at highway speeds (100km/h plus). There is faint vibration feedback in the steering when when I turn right at highway speed.

I thought the sound was from was my snow tires, but I just mounted brand new 18" Bridgestone summer tires and am experiencing the same roaring noise (like the sound really knobby tires on a truck makes). I know it's not front the engine because the sound gets louder in a linear fashion, independent of when I press the gas.

I am starting to think either the front bearings are toast, or a suspension component or transaxle/bushing etc is worn out.

I will try the suggested approach above -- has anyone experienced something similar?

I will be bringing it into the shop today. I had thought it was my tires initially, but I got the exact same noise with my both my summers and my snows. The car doesn't get driven much these days, I drive my 6 to work and the 3 is mostly for my wife but she rarely uses it. I do drive it to Watkins Glen on weekend I work at the track, its about a 180 mile trip, but I hardly had time to do that last year, so the car is pretty dormant. (and no I haven't had the car on track in anger).

Hopefully I'll find something out today...no idea what a repair may cost at this point.

Is this a rocket science replacement? I trust my shop with oil changes, tire rotation, and he's done the brakes, which seem to still be working..He's much cheaper than the dealer.

It's likely a worn out bearing -- I had my front driver side bearing replaced and the noise went away. I had the same issue -- the noise persisted with both winter and summer tires on. All in the job was just under $500 Canadian, which included an alignment ($100). So just the bearing job with labour would be about $400 Canadian.

My garage said they have a special press device to fit the new bearing -- I would assume most garages have this, as all cars have wheel bearings.

So..yes, worn bearing...$461.77 at the corner shop. He says its probably due to the car not being driven much...my freaking rear rotors are rusting too...

Poor guy test drove it after the repair, and caught a rear tire on the side of a pot hole and blew the tire, so I got a brand new Dunlop too.

Moving parts don't wear unless they are moving..........:surprise:

Rotors can rust in a matter of days, but sealed bearings don't go bad from not being driven enough. May be some trickery afoot??
